The Man behind Mc Do: Pinoys won't taste Big Mac and Happy Meal without him; thanks to you, George Yang



In my younger years, I grew up eating fast food favorites like burgers, fries, fried chicken and spaghetti. I still remember when my parents used to bring me to this fast food giant right after every Sunday church. As a kid, I was the king of their play ground! I've enjoyed countless of their birthday parties and even got afraid of this clown-like mascot who wears big red shoes that matches his wide red lips. When I reached my high school and college years, this fast food chain became my third home (next to school) where my friends and I used to hangout after classes. The walls and windows of this food chain had seen me grow as a student, working on my school projects and also flirting with girls on dates (the best dating hub for students.haha!). I'm sure like any other student today, school life would not be so much fun without Mc Donald's.

Now that I'm all grown up but still young at heart, Mc Donald's still plays a big part of my life. Every human being on this planet may have the same or variety of stories to share about their Mc Donald's experience and I'm sure that its would be all about fun. Mc Donald's history in the Philippines didn’t start with all smiles. The man who brought that American favorite chain to Manila, George Yang started his Mc Donald's dream with so much of failure but with his undying passion and determination to win; “Mc Do” as fondly calls by Pinoys is now part of our social history.

In his early years of marriage with wife, Kristine; the couple worked hard together in various ventures. George began his career in marketing working at a tobacco company while doing side jobs, such as selling insurance, nicotine guards and cosmetics. Not only that, he also taught finance and marketing management classes at De La Salle University while Kristine focused on cigarette filters and jewelry business. Because of the success of the Yang's jewelry line called “Kristine”, George immediately got interested into a bigger business enterprise of bringing Mc Donald's in to our local shores. Mc Donald's was a fast growing American food brand then, being franchised to many countries. And so he expressed his interest of bringing it here through a letter sent to the main office in the United States. But unfortunately the first attempt resulted to a decline response in 1974. During that time, Mc Donald's headquarters was not ready to expand in the Philippines but in George's perception it was the other way around. Just to prove that we were ready to prosper a quick service restaurant, he sent numerous clippings of our economic reviews to the mother office attached with personal letters just to say hello expressing that they didn't forget about his intent.

The Mc Donald's dream was close to a reality when a group of executives from the main office visited Manila for a possible business expansion in 1976. Bigwigs from local well established companies also expressed interest in Mc Donald's but it never stopped George from backing out from his pitch for the brand's franchise. When it was he's turn to impress the big bosses from the U.S, a tour around Metro Manila's bustling commercial hubs took place. While on the road in an old borrowed Mercedes Benz, the car broke down in the middle of the street. Tropical heat went inside the vehicle and the visitors started to experience a dose of inconvenience. Despite of that unexpected embarrassment, George remained relax and told his guests that if they were on hunt for a long-term business partner, that partner must be ready to roll up his sleeves and do the work in good times and in bad. He was so honest about his intentions by presenting his capacities, business plans and even his family members. Powered with great determination to get that big yes from Mc Donald's management team, George Yang and his then, 15 year old son Kenneth worked as crew members in a Hong Kong branch after that unforgettable incident. They learned about so much of the brand's working environment from preparing french fries and Big Macs, mopping floors, cleaning tables to manning the counters through an arranged voluntary immersion.

The father and son work experience in a Hong Kong branch even reached the U.S main office that probably added plus points to George's bid. After a long process of choosing the man for the Philippine franchise, George Yang finally received the much awaited “yes” and “congratulations” in 1980. The first ever local Mc Donald's store opened its doors in Morayta, Manila that made headlines. Additional stores followed in Cubao and Greenhills, where the first drive thru outlet was experience. For over 30 years of existence in the Philippines, Mc Donald's created unforgettable product innovations, advertisements and services such as Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, Burger Mc Do, Apple pie, Chicken Mc Do, 24 hour delivery's 8-MCDO, Mc Cafe, Kiddie Crew program, birthday party packages and who won't forget getting a “Happy Meal”. At present, The Yang's do not only takes pride of the Mc Donald's brand. George has also invested in real estate while his children, Kenneth (who is the current main man of Mc Do Philippines), Richie, Kristopher and Karen followed his entrepreneurial footsteps in developing their own brands. Rising food chains' Superbowl, Big Buddha, Chili's and licensing enterprise Fun Characters (Walt Disney/ Marvel Comics); Mint Brands (Cartoon Network) are all part of the Yang's business portfolio.

When asked about George's proudest achievement in Mc Donald's, he said that “Mc Do was able to change the perception about people working in restaurants. People from all walks of life work side by side, and command respect, following the higher standards we set on cleanliness, service , values and how to treat people.” He takes pride that many of his former employees end up becoming entrepreneurs, restauranteurs, hoteliers and investment bankers. Many could honestly say that George's journey with Mc Donald's has reached continuous success. “ Success is not measured not only by how much you have accumulated but how much also you have given back. Whatever charitable thing you're doing, that's compassion. Helping people is compassion.” Those words by George brings a reality as he fully supports Mc Donald's global charity program for childcare’s welfare called Ronald Mc Donald's House Charities. The foundation provides out-most assistance in health and education in the country. Few years back, the organization collaborated with Department of Education for the Bright Minds Read program that aims to uplift Filipino children literacy.

George Yang exemplifies the true Filipino spirit of being determined, focused, ambitious and compassionate. He has so much of faith and belief in the youth that led him in acquisition of Mc Donald's and developed other brands intended primarily for the youth. And now that he all gives back his success also for the youth, my personal admiration on him is now endless. So now you know the reason why we should visit Mc Donald's regularly. You get to enjoy the food and service while they give it back to those who needs it most. What else are you waiting for? 'Kita-kits' sa Mc Do kase 'Love ko to'. A Superhero flies high while Willie keeps feet on the ground



 

Revillame defines Rizal: Willie Revillame chooses to keep his both feet on the ground as he never forgets to give back more than Rizal could do.



Nomination entry to Rizal Awards @150, honoring deserving Filipinos who defines heroism in their respective field. Jose Rizal is celebrating his sesquicentennial birth on June 2012 organized by National Historical Commission of the Philippines.



Many could attest that I'm very choosy when it comes to scents. I only wear a scent of my personal choice even if I get to receive a much popular and expensive brands. My regular visits to Bench allows me to check on variety of home made products that at par to global standards and their so called celebrity collection always ring a bell on me to always try it out. I've been using Wil Eau de toilet for almost a year now and it never makes me stop using it. Bench must have put something interesting on Willie Revillame's brand of perfume that makes me gaga over it even if I don't idolize Willie at all.

The smell is so amazingly interesting suited perfectly on the life of “Papi” which eventually interests me to discover his story.

Not your usual rags to riches fairytale, Willie Revillame better known by the masses as “Kuya Wil” or “Papi” made history that was packed with controversies, romantic break-ups, tough challenges and triumphant successes like a box office movie. A dropped out dentistry student with a heart of a musician, Willie was discovered doing beats as a drummer that made him enter the world of showbiz as sidekicks in movies. Big breaks came in when he started working on noon time television, hosting game shows such as MTB and Wowowee on ABSCBN prior to his contentious transfer to rival station TV 5 producing his own show Wil Time Big Time. As all known, his shows were created for the masses to showcase their talents and life's sentiments. This also became an avenue for charitable acts by him and his Filipino viewers around the globe.

I'm certainly sure that many will raise their eyebrows if I will say that Willie Revillame and national hero, Jose Rizal are the same in many ways. Yes, in many aspects but not all for sure. Both of them lacks in height, got plenty of hot chicks, treasures family ties, charismatic charm to the people, stands for righteousness and most of all they embody the virtues of faith, hard work, patience, courage and determination in making our nation achieve freedom, changing our lives to be liberated from hunger, poverty and oppression regardless either from the past or present situation our country is experiencing.

Rizal died for his country by uplifting the minds of the Filipinos to fight for what is right and this has given us freedom we have today. Heroism in Willie might not be like of Rizal but as everybody knows, his undying passion of helping nobodies in his shows has proven that he defends the Filipino's right to hope, inspire and realize brighter future like him. Real heroes are not born to live a perfect life. Despite of living imperfectly, when a person becomes a man for others it defines real heroism.

Willie cannot fly in the sky like superheroes do even if he has all the riches in the universe because he chooses to keep his both feet grounded as he never forgets to give back more than Rizal could do.

Filipino luxury at its finest: The Lobby at the Peninsula Manila represents class beyond compare

Passing by Ayala Avenue almost everyday of my life reveals that I have memorized all the buildings and landmarks in the area. Whenever people ask me, where is this? how do I get there? Can I take a walk from here to there? I can assure everyone that I can provide correct directions. Ayala Avenue is probably one of the busiest places in Metro Manila. It's the country's biggest business and leisure destination and it wouldn't be complete without grand hotels that defines the great Filipino hospitality. In the corner of Ayala and Makati avenues, I guess that nobody will ever miss this place that has become a national landmark for many years. Known as the home of the grandest waterfalls and fountain in the metropolis, The Peninsula Manila is a haven for the most discriminating traveller. Popularly called as "The Pen" and "Manila Pen", it was the first ever hotel built outside of its mother hotel in Hongkong, coinciding the International Monetary Fund Conference in Manila held almost 3 decades ago. Since then, The Pen is renowned for providing the best accomodations in town. It's main lobby is touted as the hub of who's who in Manila, serving all day dining with a great view of its dramatic sunburst sculpture seen on it's 4 story ceiling. They got the best tasting but expensive "halo-halo", clubhouse sandwiches and ice cream in a bowl. At night, The Lobby turns into a romantic music hall where an orchestra set the mood for everyone's enjoyment. Perfect dating place? you got it right! but make sure you bring bundles of cash or else your credit card will suffer :-)

Recently, I surprised my parents to stay here in celebration of their 30th year of marriage. We were given nice rooms with great views. Aside from that, General Manager Sonja Vodusek even sent us fruits and personalized cake for my parents...that was so sweet. Accomodations at The Pen are way different from other hotels I've stayed in, most noticeable was the interior designs that showcase Filipino artistry. I can't believe that these locally made materials could look so elegant with proper placements and lighting. Sleeping is the best thing to experience at The Pen. I can choose whatever type of pillow I want plus their bed made me want not to wake up anymore, but kidding aside, I really had a relaxing sleep.

Glamour and great service makes The Peninsula, a stand out from other luxury chains. Their commitment to bestow the best of service to all of its patron has given them a distinction that no other Manila hotel could comes close. I still remember when the entire world welcomed the new millenium, The Pen was the chosen venue for the music video shoot, where Regine Velasquez sang on top of the fountain together with hundreds of children that was broadcast worldwide at the stroke of midnight. And of course who wouldn't forget the government army rebellion that took place at the hotel lobby where gun fires damaged the walls and entrance doors. Guests and staff were kept safe. Thanks to the entire hotel staff for becoming heroes. These situations has proven that either in the best times or worst times, expect that people at The Pen will always treat you special and safe. That makes The Pen as my pal.

EDSA SHANGRI-LA MANILA : Stunning like a Miss Universe

Celebrating 20 years of  Execellence: Warm smiles upon entrance makes Edsa Shangri-La  distinctly amazing. 

The first time that I set my foot in Edsa Shangri-la was way back during my early grade school years. Manila was hosting then the 1994 Miss Universe and my dad hitched me in to check out the stunning ladies from all around the world where they were having a ball at the ballroom. My family was attending a wedding reception at that time in another room but since these gorgeous women were partying next to our function room; my dad grabbed me and my brother after having dinner to the Miss Universe ball leaving my mom and my grandmother clueless. During that night, we enjoyed partying with the girls from the Universe rather than dancing with the newly weds. It was a night to remember.

Incomparable Beauty, Elegance and Sophistication best described Edsa Shangri-la like of those Miss Universe candidates. Majestic lobby, classy interiors and not to mention their well attentive staff makes every experience ultra memorable. My family regularly dines in at any of their dining outlets during special occasions. When I started earning money for a living, it was my turn to treat them back either for coffee with chocolates or pastries or an overnight stay. I just love the comfort of their rooms. Beds are soft and pillows are scented! For every Edsa Shangri-la stay, I cannot forget to chillax in their paradise inspired garden swimming pool. As far as I know they are the only luxury hotel in the metropolis who has a “beach” ambiance. Yeah, Edsa Shangri-la's garden is a mini-Boracay or Palawan. Beside it is the Chi spa where heaven pleasures can be felt. If your into tennis then no worries cause there's a court for you to play in but if your into cool music and cold drinks then E's Bar is the place to be where great Ortigas view awaits you. Heat, Paparrazi, Lobby Lounge among others must be never out of your list and after all the eating and drinking ends, Health Club is there to make your figure never be out of shape.

This year, as Edsa Shangri-la celebrates its 20 years of service, more and more fond memories will be remembered. And for sure I will keep on coming back to this so called “home” where the I have found great memories that is beyond compare even if I'd get to marry a Miss Universe.

THE MAKATI SHANGRI-LA MANILA: Feeling Royalty at High Tea

Coffee, High Tea or Me: Makati Shangri-la Manila's Lobby Lounge high tea never fails to impress me.

I usually spend my mid-afternoons taking out time to workout and do my regular fitness regimen but one time I decided to explore and hunt for something that is interesting. Instead of running around Ayala Triangle that afternoon, I walked inside Makati Shangri-la Manila and found a posh hang out place. Lobby Lounge is at the heart of the main hotel lobby and offers a spectacular view of the Shangri-la's garden. Open for 24 hours daily, they serve breakfast, lunch, cocktails, dinner, midnight snacks and even high tea. High Tea? yeah you heard it right, sounds new to you? yes for me! but after learning so much about this afternoon meal tradition, I just feel that I'm already a royalty.

High tea is a meal taken from 2-5pm originated in United Kingdom popularized by the upper classes and the royalties in 1840s. For us Filipinos, we call it "merienda" as inherited from the Spanish tradition of taking snacks. Traditionally tea is brewed in a tea pot served with milk or sugar. It is best paired with freshly baked goodies such as scones, cookies or cakes and sometimes added with sandwiches. For many years now, High tea tradition has evolved globally and you can actually try it being served in hotel cafes and coffee shops everywhere. Shangri-la makes high tea experience added with an orchestra background music that makes your afternoon hanging out so relaxing. I tasted their Classic and Filipino sets with Earl Grey tea that comes with milk. Absolutely, I enjoyed my high tea even got lost in time leaving the place late for my dinner appoinment. I just hope that in my next high tea, Queen Elizabeth of England would invite me to her Buckingham Palace so I could bring her our own Filipino snack favorites...empanada, bananaque and pancit! I'm sure after she tastes it, she'll gladly say.."Bloody good!"

Manila as becoming a fast rising fashion hub in Asia, fashion events are now much anticipated by many. Dramatic lights, upbeat music and slick runways make every model’s walk as stylish as the clothes they wear. Now, do you think this just happens because of magic? Then think again.

Fashion is like an air that he breathes, fashion show is not an experience if Robby Carmona did not create it. At an early age, fashion was already his world. Robby’s dad was once a top model who traveled places and as he became his dad’s travel buddy, seeing trendy clothes and meeting designers got him interested to try modeling too. Self confessed unsuccessful being on stage as a model, he ventured into another aspect of fashion by producing and directing. For many years of professional experience in this field, Robby has proven that his innovation and passion for excellence in his craft made him an as in demand events director today. He’s very much known working on the stages of Philippine Fashion Week and Bench. Aside from that, he squeezes in his time as the main man behind the success of Saga Events, Inc. which specializes in production of fashion shows, product launches, corporate milestones and other brand marketing activities for the past 10 years. Robby as a true believer of teamwork and artistry, continues the promise of amazing his audience with new concepts to watch out for.

Living a glamorous life was one of his dreams. Born in a huge family with 8 children, Jackie Aquino started his career being in loved with the performing arts and music before becoming a stalwart in fashion direction. His father was an air force general but Jackie has chosen to take off on a different kind of runway. As fashion shows being redeveloped in the mid-80’s, Jackie made a reinvention on stage direction when he started to conceptualize an interaction between the models and its audience. This allowed models to freely do whatever they want on stage being in character to further develop their own distinctive style for them to be recognized. The idea became a hit and Jackie has found success in directing shows everywhere. But just like in any other success story, struggles really come along the way and dealing with drugs for him was the most difficult. Leaving a glamorous lifestyle, he flew to the US and lived a new life away from drugs. But his true calling came back when his best bud, designer Randy Ortiz asked him to come home in Manila to start doing his passion again. Jackie’s career returned smoothly as if he had never been gone for 3 years. Unforgettable runway shows for Piaget, Gucci, Ferragamo, Bulgari, Cartier – you name a global brand, he has done it. A genuine example of a renewed person, Jackie always shares his story to all the people he works with and now that story serve as a lifelong inspiration.

Filipino ingenuity is one of the traits that we could all be proud of globally. Robby and Jackie personify that great talent; excellence and perseverance are the keys to success despite of many challenges that may arise. These pilots of the runways have gone a long way; I guess their next goal to pursue is to train me as a cabin crew so I could be the next zoolander-like supermodel or if it doesn’t work at all – I’ll be happy to be a passenger forever as long as I’ll have an all access entry to the ladies’ dressing room. Now, I think that’s better than to be a supermodel. J

Every time that I would pass by in major Metro Manila thoroughfares, I always get amazed to these huge billboards that are seen everywhere, dreaming that someday I’ll have one wearing only my underwear. Just kidding, it is just astonishing to know that advertising has gone a long way in developing modern ways to sell products and because of that, Philippine fashion is now becoming more recognized by many. Who would have thought that almost 25 years ago, a small store selling t-shirts is now an iconic name that everybody looks up to.

Bench is a registered trademark of Suyen Corporation, one of the largest retailing conglomerates in the country who have put us in the map of world fashion. As everybody knows the brand is derived from the name of its founder and innovator, Ben Chan who is the son of Lib Chan, the man behind Liwayway Marketing Corporation that is known for its coffee, candles and starch trading and now renowned for their snack brand “Oishi” that is widely popular here and in China. Ben has a background of interior designing and has great passion for creativity and innovation. Only Belo touches my soul, who touches yours?

Same writing was also submitted to My lcon, My Hero Journalism contest a recognition to the most admired Filipinos in 2010 presented by The Philippine Star.


Every time that we speak about beauty there is only one name that always stands out. “I want everyone in the Philippines to look beautiful, one person at a time.” That’s the famous line from Dr. Victoria “Vicki” Belo, whose ambition is to make our country to be touted as “The Beauty Capital of Asia”. I bet you know her because she’s a prominent media and social personality that might be as popular next to Manny Pacquiao and Kris Aquino who started her beauty empire 20 years ago as an ordinary dermatologist in her humble clinic before becoming a “fairy godmother” to celebrities, top political and social personalities today.

Educated with a degree of Psychology at University of the Philippines, Medicine at University of Santo Tomas and Dermatology in Thailand, Dr. Belo pioneered in introducing medical procedures of liposuction and Aptos thread seamless facelift to the Philippine market. These achievements are part of her professional career but what made me think that she is fit for this recognition is not primarily because of these accomplishments but more of her undying love and respect for her parents which is very Filipino. She is known to be an adopted child, but her Ike and Nena Belo Foundation speaks of her unparalleled gratitude to her parents who have molded her in every inch of what she is today.  The organization’s core advocacy is geared towards physical, mental and social welfare of its beneficiaries. They are active in community outreach programs, public service assistance, medical missions, surgical assistance and environmental drives. This action of hers naming a foundation under the legacy of her parents is undeniably significant that no other genuine child could match.

Frankly speaking I’m not a Belo fan or friend but her works made me say that she is fit for a credit. Her name maybe synonymous to controversies and other negative issues but as for me, no human being live a perfect life. People think in various perspectives and it doesn’t really matter what they think about us, for as long as we know who we really are, we have goals set for ourselves, for our loved ones and for the betterment our fellow men, I think that these are the most important things we have to treasure in our lives than knowing what others would say. Dr. Belo is like that. Only Belo touches my soul, who touches yours?
